ELEGANT: Security of Critical Infrastructures With Digital Twins

چکیده
The past years have witnessed an increasing interest and concern regarding the development of security monitoring management mechanisms for Critical Infrastructures, due to their vital role in ensuring availability many essential services. This task is not easy specific characteristics such systems, natural resistance Infrastructures operators against actions implying downtime. Digital Twins, as accurate virtual models physical objects or processes, can provide a faithful environment analysis evaluation potential mitigation strategies be deployed face situations. Nonetheless, on-premises deployment expensive, significant CAPEX whose return will depend on ability plan deploy suitable support infrastructure, well implementing efficient scalable data collection processing capable taking advantage acquired resources. paper presents off-premises approach design Twins secure critical infrastructures, developed scope ELEGANT project. Such are built using real-time, high fidelity replicas Programming Logic Controllers, coupled with supporting validation Machine Learning mitigate threats like Denial Service attacks. ELEGANT, which leveraged from capabilities Fed4Fire federated testbeds evaluated feasibility cloudified thus converting part projected in-premises model into on-demand, pay-as-you-go OPEX, eventually paving way establishment DTaaS (Digital Twin Service) paradigm. achieved results demonstrate that pipelines providing low impact terms resource usage Distributed attack scenarios, when higher volumes generated.

Due to physical and logical vulnerabilities, a critical infrastructure (CI) can encounter failures of various degrees of severity, and since there are many interdependencies between CIs, simple failures can have dramatic consequences on the users. In this paper, we mainly focus on malicious threats that might affect the information and communciation system that controls the Critical Infrastruct...
متن کاملArchitectural Model for Information Security Analysis of Critical Information Infrastructures
Critical Information Infrastructures (CII) are computer systems and networks that support and control operations of many critical infrastructures that our society depends on, such as power plants, electrical grids, and water and waste facilities. Since the operations of CII also effect physical world, they are a good example of large-scale, critical cyber-physical systems. In recent years, CII ...
متن کاملModelling Security of Critical Infrastructures: A Survivability Assessment
Critical infrastructures, usually designed to handle disruptions caused by human errors or random acts of nature, define assets whose normal operation must be guaranteed to maintain its essential services for human daily living. Malicious intended attacks to these targets need to be considered during system design. To face with these situations, defense plans must be developed in advance. In th...
متن کاملSimulative Evaluation of Security Attacks in Networked Critical Infrastructures
ICT is becoming a fundamental and pervasive component of critical infrastructures (CIs). Despite the advantages that it brings about, ICT also exposes CIs to a number of security attacks that can severely compromise human safety, service availability and business interests. Although it is vital to ensure an adequate level of security, it is practically infeasible to counteract all possible atta...
متن کاملApproach to security assessment of critical infrastructures' information systems
This article presents an approach to the security assessment of the information systems of critical infrastructures. The approach is based on the faithful reconstruction of the evaluated information system in a computer security laboratory followed by simulations of possible threats against the system. The evidence collected during the experiments, stored and organised using a proprietary syste...
